To Tyniec by bike
Our bike tour begins in the meeting pont at corner of Błonia Park and runs to less inhabited quarters of Krakow. The first place of interest on the way is an old stone quarry called Zakrzówek. Nowadays, this stone pit is flooded by emerald crystal-clean water flowing from the underground springs. Its beauty and calm makes Zakrzówek one of the greatest natural attractions of Krakow, and the favourite venue for local divers and explorers. On the bottom of this artificial lake there is a bizarre underwater forest and some interesting wrecks of a bus, a few cars and boats. There is also an interesting story behind the place connected with Karol Wojtyla (late pope John Paul II), who was working here as a grinder during the Second World War (in 1940-44) and then composed a poem referring to this experience. The place is surrounded by the Park with beautiful white, rocky cliffs called „Skałki Twardowskiego”. There are also many caves and limestone ravines which make this place really mysterious and fascinating.
Afterwards, we go along the Vistula, the longest river of Poland. Our destination is an old Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec, founded by the king Boleslaw 1000 years ago to protect the city of Krakow. The Romanesque church is situated on a high cliff over the Vistula River. We will visit the monastery and a monk-guide will tell as a story of the Abbey. In the churchyard one can also buy some fresh organic food, herbal teas, jam, honey and alcohol manufactured by the monks according to the secret traditional, hundreds years old recipes. Then we will also have some spare time for relaxing and walking along the river. While walking along the cliff one can experience extraordinary atmosphere of tranquility and natural harmony..
On our way back to Krakow we stop in the restaurant to have a hot, tasty meal and drinks. After a day full of impressions we cycle back to Krakow along the Tyniec Cycle Route.
The route we take is truly picturesque and unforgettable. The tourists are usually impressed by the historic monuments and local nature. Zakrzówek and Skałki Twardowskiego are the magic places, and perfect place for taking a rest.
